Introduction

Among all the areas we’ll explore, this one offers the greatest potential for an easier full communication and growth because we can nurture it without the complexities that often come with primary relationships. While there are unique benefits to both types of relationships, for me and many of my friends, friendships have held a sacred and safer place to share more of oneself without the concern of excessive vulnerability. Together, we’ll examine how you view your friendships, identifying where they hold potential for depth and where they may remain more on the surface.

At one level, there are friendships centered around shared activities and fun. While this brings enjoyment and lightness, it typically doesn’t create deeper intimacy. This level of companionship allows for a certain indirect connectedness, and how important this is can vary greatly from person to person. If this is where most of your friendships lie, we’ll look at ways to deepen these connections to better support your inner life, either with these friends or new ones.

Another common type of friendship offers a sense of security—a feeling that someone has your back in nearly all situations.

These relationships often don’t involve deep exchanges about personal growth areas or behaviors that may affect others negatively; loyalty tends to take precedence over honest, constructive feedback. For many, this is the highest level of support they’ve received in friendship—a true gift—even if it may lack the openness for sharing insights that encourage growth.

The deepest potential in friendship, however, emerges when there is enough trust and maturity for friends not only to support one another but to mirror back the truth of their experiences, rather than dominantly validating them. In these friendships, there is an honesty that allows either person to express when the other isn’t living up to their potential and to present differing views skillfully and thoughtfully. This kind of communication fosters ongoing growth in heart and wisdom, allowing both people to address even difficult topics sensitively, despite the natural discomfort that may arise with disagreement.

Finding this type of friendship—a rare and profound connection—is a true gift. It offers both steady support and the opportunity for mutual growth.
