In this section, we’ll take an honest look at where the loves in our lives have thrived and where significant limitations may exist. Love is one of life’s great humblers, revealing where we all have gaps of unawareness. One thing that often goes unspoken amidst cultural romanticization is the role of physical attraction. While it’s an essential and hopefully an enduring part of love, it is only a starting point. When attraction becomes the dominant element, love remains limited. Although most of us recognize this intellectually, our instincts often run away with chemistry, a prime example of how our subconscious can shape our lives. This exploration will invite us to look at how we can deepen our capacity to love.
We’ll focus deeply on qualities like empathy, communication, tenderness, honesty, and an appreciation of the bigger picture in our relationships. No relationship has it all, so we’ll also have the opportunity to reflect on how we’re faring in relation to our own growing capacities. A crucial step is recognizing our own challenges, allowing us to be more objective about where we’ve been, where we are, and where we hope to go next.
A takeaway here is to remember that if, among the ten qualities you find most important in a relationship, you’re cultivating at least seven, you’re doing well. While certain aspects, like honesty and loyalty, are non-negotiable, love doesn’t require perfection but rather a commitment to growth and opening the heart.
Finally, one of the most crucial elements to take away is that love requires continual evolving to stay alive. This isn’t a judgment but an opportunity—one we all can see, reflect on, and embrace as we move forward. In my experience as a counselor, relationships grounded in this perspective are the most intimate and lasting.
